    Then Laugh

    This is a poem I borrowed from the Eleanor's Cottage site...Patricia, I hope you don't mind, but I really love it and wanted to share...for those of you who have not yet clicked on the "Eleanor's Cottage" link on the left, I recommend you do so immediately.  Her site is amazing, and I think she's pretty darn special too!

    Then Laugh - Bertha Adams Backus

    Build for yourself a strong box,

         Fashion each part with care;

    When it's strong as your hand can make it,

         Put all your troubles there;

    Hide there all thought of your failures,

         And each bitter cup that you quaff;

    Lock all your heartaches within it,

         Then sit on the lid and laugh.

    Tell no one else its contents,

         Never its secrets share;

    When you've dropped in your care and worry

         Keep them forever there;

    Hide them from sight so completely

         That the world will never dream half;

    Fasten the strong box securely--

         Then sit on the lid and laugh.

    Butterfly

    Butterfly

    Today I spied a butterfly

    Floating lazily, then flying high

    As I watched it flit from leaf to leaf

    I forgot my sorrow,

    and I lay down my grief.

    A brilliant indigo beauty

    I stood almost mesmerized

    It's fragility and grace

    wasn't lost to my eyes.

    Soon enough it will fly away, I thought

    But I was surprised to find the peace

    It had brought.

    As it fluttered off, I closed my eyes

    And prayed that soon

    I would see more butterflies.
